The Scatterometer Climatology of Ocean Winds (SCOW)

C.M. Risien and D.B. Chelton

The Scatterometer Climatology of Ocean Winds (SCOW) was first released in November 2008 based on 8 years (September 1999 - August 2007) of QuikSCAT scatterometer data.

We are pleased to announce that we have updated SCOW to include QuikSCAT observations through October 2009. SCOW wind fields are now based on 122 months (September 1999 - October 2009) of QuikSCAT scatterometer data. In addition, SCOW now includes a sea surface temperature (SST) climatology that is based on 89 months (June 2002 - October 2009) of AMSR-E observations and a SST climatology that is based on 122 months (September 1999 - October 2009) of Version 2 of the NOAA AVHRR-only Optimum Interpolated 1/4 Degree SST fields (Reynolds et al., 2007, J. Climate, pp 5473-5496).

These updated fields were calculated using the methods detailed in:
Risien, C.M., and D.B. Chelton, 2008: A Global Climatology of Surface Wind and Wind Stress Fields from Eight Years of QuikSCAT Scatterometer Data. J. Phys. Oceanogr., 38, 2379-2413.     Click HERE for corrections to this paper.
